GOVERNMENT BANS TEACHERS’ STRIKE

The Swaziland Government has declared a two-day strike by teachers due to start tomorrow (11 April 2012) illegal.

The strike over pay was due to coincide with a mass protest for democratic reform due on Thursday 12 April.

Evart Madlopha, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service told the teachers’ union SNAT the strike could not go ahead because the government had not been given seven days advance warning.

Other public sector unions are expected to take part in the 12 April protest but it is not clear if they will be caught up in the same ruling.
