RUBBER BULLETS FIRED AT STRIKERS

Manzini, the second city of Swaziland, is reported to be at a standstill this afternoon (19 September 2011) as a bus operator’s strike has turned violent.

Police have fired rubber bullets and teargas on striking bus operators and all roads into the city are said to be blocked.

Reports from the scene are that strikers have built barricades with burning tyres.

The strikers are protesting against traffic fines they have been receiving from police. This has been going on for some months and is said by some to be a direct result of Swaziland’s present economic crisis. One way the government is trying to raise funds is through fines inflicted on motorists.
